Project overview
The Yanco Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is a 250 MW / 1,100 MWh energy storage project located near Yanco in the Riverina region of New South Wales. The project will connect to the adjacent Yanco Substation and support a more reliable and resilient electricity network.
Following planning approval in 2025 and approval of a modification in 2026, the project has reached financial close and is progressing towards construction.
Early works are underway, with operations expected to commence in 2028.The project team remains committed to ongoing engagement with community members, landholders and stakeholders throughout construction and operation.
Site selection
Proximity to infrastructure
The location of the project was selected for its proximity to the Yanco Transgrid substation. Proposed to connect via a short underground transmission line, the project sits at a strategic location within the NSW electricity network.
Regional profile
The project is positioned within the Riverina region, a key energy-producing area of New South Wales. The site's location will support the efficient storage and dispatch of energy to meet demand across the electricity network.
Site characteristics
The project is located on an existing cropping and grazing property, with agricultural activities to continue on the surrounding land during operation.
Why BESS
Large-scale battery systems contribute to the stability and reliability of our changing energy system. The energy stored in batteries is able to be used quickly and respond to changing conditions.
Typically, battery systems charge during the day when solar energy is plentiful and release the stored energy back into the grid at night.
Balancing supply and demand
Battery systems help bridge the distance between where the electricity is generated and where it is needed most. By storing excess generation and delivering power during peak periods, batteries help optimise the flow of electricity across the national energy network.
Enhancing energy security
Battery systems can adapt to changing energy network conditions within milliseconds which assists to provide a more stable and reliable system.
Supporting a diverse system
The way in which our electricity is generated and consumed is changing. Batteries are an essential part of a more diverse and resilient system that is able to respond to change.

Battery storage supports the reliability and stability of the New South Wales power system, helping ensure a consistent supply of electricityfor homes, businesses, and communities.
Integrated Ecological Design
Enhanced Biodiversity Design
Building on detailed ecological surveys, our design incorporates features specifically for local wildlife, including water features, nesting boxes, and indigenous wildflower meadows. These enhancements support native species while working in harmony with the site's existing pastoral character.
Natural Site Screening
The site's natural topography and existing vegetation provide effective visual integration within the pastoral landscape. Additional native planting will further enhance the natural screening, particularly along Hanworth Road, minimising visual impact on the surrounding area.
Operational Excellence
Advanced remote monitoring systems ensure optimal performance with minimal physical presence. The facility operates with carefully monitored noise controls, with cooling systems designed to meet appropriate standards and guidelines. Monthly maintenance visits maximise operational efficiency while maintaining minimal local impact.
Community benefits
The project will deliver $3 million in community benefits through a Voluntary Planning Agreement with Leeton Shire Council, including:
Upgrades and maintenance of local parks, community facilities and recreational spaces
Revitalisation of Yanco's main street, including building facade improvements
Support for the Yanco Powerhouse Museum
Funding for community events over a five-year period
Support for the ongoing operation of the Roxy Community Theatre
Local employment opportunities during construction and operation of the project
By supporting local infrastructure, community facilities, cultural assets and events, the project will help deliver lasting social and economic benefits for Yanco and the broader Leeton Shire community.
